About this role
The Daily Bruin’s Online section manages digital and technological aspects of the newsroom, building and maintaining tools serving our tens of thousands of readers per week. As an Online intern, you’ll have the opportunity to develop tools used by 500+ staff and build practical software engineering skills in a collaborative newsroom environment.
Online is divided into two sections: internal tools and external sites. Internal tools focuses on the development of applications that help automate processes in the newsroom, allowing for Daily Bruin staff to work more efficiently, while External Sites builds special features and interactives published to the readers. Depending on your interests, you will work across different projects and technologies.
You do not need experience with every programming language and framework that we use. We value curiosity, willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team. Online staff will help guide interns as they gain exposure to industry tools and a collaborative environment.
As an Online intern, you will:
Contribute to projects for the Daily Bruin staff and readers
Work with technologies like Kubernetes, Django, AWS, Docker and Digital Ocean
Collaborate with other interns and staff to plan, build and test software
Communicate with editors and staff from other departments to gather requirements and feedback
Follow code guidelines and participate in active debugging and code reviews
Be willing to learn from feedback and team settings
During the course of the internship, you will learn:
How to maintain software used by a large audience
Software development life cycle (SLDC) and how to contribute meaningfully during a sprint
How web applications are built and deployed
How to use infrastructure and development tools effectively
Software development workflows, including version control, debugging and testing
How to collaborate on projects in a professional environment
How to gather pain points and turn them into technical solutions
