About this role
PRIME is the Daily Bruin’s dedicated narrative journalism section. Our driving purpose is to highlight people, voices and experiences that otherwise go overlooked by the daily news cycle. PRIME brings underrepresented narratives to the surface with a word count that allows readers to gain deep perspective and understanding of a topic.
PRIME’s stories cover a wide variety of subjects relating to UCLA and employ diverse narrative approaches. Past stories include profiles on historic queer activists at UCLA, features on student EMTs and personal columns about writers’ study abroad experiences. Unlike other sections, writers typically spend several weeks producing a story, giving them the opportunity to explore their relevant passions in depth.
A Daily Bruin PRIME intern will complete the following tasks:
Attend four in-person training sessions hosted by UCLA Student Media and Daily Bruin
Crosstrain into News or Arts with other interns (prior to PRIME-specific training)
Uphold the Daily Bruin’s ethical standards, including declaring conflicts of interest, refraining from the use of artificial intelligence and avoiding plagiarism
Engage with constructive feedback in a respectful manner
Communicate with editors and peers in a prompt and professional manner
Over the course of their time as an intern, a Daily Bruin PRIME writer will learn:
How to translate individual passions and interests relevant to the UCLA community into readable narrative journalism
How to source effectively and exhaustively
Writing in Associated Press style
The similarities and differences between PRIME style and that of the Bruin’s other sections
How to interact with and build meaningful relationships with writers, editors and other interns in a professional environment
