Photography intern

The Photo section is The Bruin’s award-winning photojournalism department and one of the highest-producing in the nation. The section’s work focuses on highlighting events, organizations and people who are part of the UCLA community. We work with nearly every section offered at The Bruin, while producing our own standalone content via our photo essays. 

Photojournalists within the section are expected to contribute to coverage across three main beats consisting of News, Sports and Arts. Under the News beat, photographers will cover events impacting the UCLA and Westwood community from student features to campus-wide protests. The Sports beat primarily covers UCLA’s varsity sports, but also reports on UCLA Club Sports and other athletic events of importance to its readers. The Arts beat highlights student artists and live events (theater performances, festivals and concerts) both on and off campus. 

Our section has been recognized by multiple press organizations including Associate Collegiate Press and Collegiate Press Association for its photojournalistic excellence.

A Daily Bruin Photo intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

• Production of photo essays. 

• Conduct on-site interviews as part of the gallery production process.

• Report on events relevant to the UCLA community (protests, portraiture, concerts, sporting events, etc.)

• Breaking/Emergency coverage and working on tight, non-negotiable deadlines.

• Proper handling of photography equipment.

• Uploading, tagging and organizing photos into our archive.
  

 Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Photo intern will learn the following:

• Operating professional-level equipment

• Interviewing and reporting standards.

• Journalistic writing/editing/reporting styles.

• Proper handling of photography equipment.

• Operating industry-standard software such as Photo Mechanic and Photoshop.

• The difference between photography and photojournalism.

• Different types of photojournalism not limited to portraiture and editorial.

The Photo section highlights events, organizations and people who are part of the UCLA community through visual journalism. It works with nearly all sections at The Bruin to provide the UCLA community with accurate representation through visual media.
