About this role

Daily Bruin Opinion opines on issues affecting the UCLA and the greater Los Angeles area. Through columns, op-eds and editorials from our award-winning board, the section seeks to publish a diverse set of perspectives on the most important issues facing Bruins. Columnists in the section have won awards for their journalism including from the Society for Professional Journalism and the California College Media Association. They also have matriculated to excellent journalism publications and programs after graduating from UCLA, such as Columbia Journalism School. Feel free to view our columnists’ work here.

  • A Daily Bruin Opinion intern will complete the following tasks

    • Attend three in-person training sessions, two of which will be led by UCLA Student Media and one of which will be led by the Daily Bruin’s Opinion editor team.

    • Attend small group training sessions led by an assistant Opinion editor.

    • Contribute at least one story per quarter to the opinion section.

    • Uphold the Daily Bruin’s ethical standards, including declaring conflicts of interest, refraining from the use of artificial intelligence and avoiding plagiarism.

    • Be willing to take – and learn from – constructive feedback.

    • Communicate with editors and other staffers in a prompt and professional manner.

  • Ex: Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Opinion intern will learn the following

    • The process of producing an opinion story, from pitching to publication.

    • Best practices for interviewing sources and building sourcing relationships.

    • How to write an opinion column, including proper structure, effective argumentation and informative reporting.

    • Writing in Associated Press style.

    • The ethical guidelines to which journalists adhere.

    • How to interact with colleagues in a professional environment.
