News Writing Intern

The Daily Bruin’s award-winning News section strives to keep an accurate record of the UCLA and Westwood community by producing timely and relevant coverage. We keep our audience informed by holding people in power accountable, uplifting underrepresented perspectives and maintaining truth and accuracy in our reporting. Our articles can be read through the Bruin’s website and our print issues, which are placed on stands throughout campus three times a week. 

The News section has five beats: features and student life, national news and higher education, science and health, campus politics and metro. After writing enough articles, contributors are promoted to paid staff. 

The Bruin maintains high standards and operates as an outlet competitive with other established local news organizations. While not every member of the News section goes on to be a professional journalist after college, all staffers leave with transferrable skills in writing, teamwork, implementing constructive criticism and accomplishing tasks on deadline. Prior journalism experience is not required to join the Bruin, or the News section. 

A Daily Bruin News intern will complete the following tasks:

• Attend three in-person training sessions, two of which will be led by UCLA Student Media and one of which will be led by the Daily Bruin’s News team.

• Attend individual training sessions led by an assistant news editor.

• Attend at least two section-wide events every quarter. 

• Write at least three news stories per quarter.

• Uphold the Daily Bruin’s ethical standards, including declaring conflicts of interest, refraining from the use of artificial intelligence and avoiding plagiarism.

• Be open to feedback and learn from constructive criticism. 

• Communicate with editors and other staffers in a prompt and professional manner.

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin News intern will learn the following: 

• How to pitch, source and write news stories. 

• Best practices for interviewing sources and building sourcing relationships.

• Writing in Associated Press style and adopting news judgement. 

• How to write breaking news stories. 

• The ethical guidelines to which journalists adhere.

• How to interact with colleagues in a professional environment.
