About this role

The Quad is the Daily Bruin’s explanatory journalism section, which focuses on breaking down salient topics to make them digestible. From Westwood’s housing market to state politics, the Quad looks into issues that are relevant to the UCLA community – and could use a comprehensive exploration. Our stories situate themselves within the rest of the Daily Bruin by further breaking down our more immediate coverage. To better understand the work that The Quad does, please look at our work on the Daily Bruin’s website.

A Quad intern will complete the following tasks:

  • Attend three in-person training sessions, two of which will be led by UCLA Student Media and one of which will be led by the Daily Bruin’s Quad team.

  • Contribute at least one story per quarter to The Quad.

  • Regularly meet with The Quad’s dedicated writing teams, which everyone will be a part of.

  • Uphold the Daily Bruin’s ethical standards, including declaring conflicts of interest, refraining from the use of artificial intelligence and avoiding plagiarism.

  • Be willing to take – and learn from – constructive feedback.

  • Communicate with editors and other staffers in a prompt and professional manner.

Over the course of their internship, a Quad intern will learn:

  • The steps of writing an explanatory journalism article, from pitching to art brainstorming to publication.

  • Best practices for finding, interviewing, and building relationships with sources.

  • How to collaborate with others when writing

  • How to align their writing with Associated Press style

  • The ethical guidelines which journalists must follow

  • How to interact with colleagues in a newsroom environment
