Data Journalism intern

The Daily Bruin Data section produces articles and graphics using data. The section combines web design, visualizations, data analysis and graphic design to investigate pressing issues and topics within the UCLA community.

Contributors work in groups to turn an initial question into an informative article, combining technical skills in data wrangling, programming and design with the typical reporting process such as sourcing, interviewing and editing, to bring the article to life. Contributors also work closely with other sections like News and Sports to produce web visualizations and data graphics to support their stories. Each quarter, contributors are expected to produce one article and complete one collaboration request.

Each Data contributor offers a unique skillset that makes the section’s work possible, whether that be a background in journalism, data analysis, visual design or web development. No prior technical experience is required. The section is looking for dedicated students who are interested in developing their existing interests and learning how to turn data into clear, engaging and responsible journalism.

A Daily Bruin Data intern will complete the following tasks:

• Attend three in-person training sessions – two led by UCLA Student Media and one led by the Daily Bruin’s Data team.

• Contribute at least one long-form Data article and one collaborative request during their first full quarter.

• Work with other Data staffers to source and analyze data, report stories and create visualizations.

• Uphold the Daily Bruin’s journalistic and ethical standards throughout the reporting and publication process.

• Be willing to take – and learn from – constructive feedback.

• Communicate with editors and other staffers in a prompt and professional manner.

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Data intern will learn the following:

• The process of producing a data journalism story, from pitching and data collection to reporting, visualization and publication.

• How to source, clean, analyze and interpret data for journalistic purposes.

• How to translate data into clear and engaging graphics and visualizations.

• How to develop interactive visualizations using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

• Best practices for interviewing sources and building sourcing relationships.

• Principles of effective visual storytelling and designing for digital and mobile audiences.

• The ethical guidelines that govern journalism and the responsible use and presentation of data.

• How to collaborate with reporters, editors, designers and other staffers in a professional newsroom environment.
