About this role

As a whole, BruinLife is composed of various components: the BruinLife Annual, BruinLife Online and BruinLife Photo Studio.

As a member of the BruinLife Video Podcast Staff, you will serve as an on-camera host and content creator for BruinLife’s video podcast programming. You will help develop engaging episode ideas, research topics and guests, conduct interviews and lead conversations that highlight the experiences, perspectives and stories of the Bruin community.

Staff members will focus on creating a podcast space that highlights students’ voices, fosters belonging and encourages thoughtful conversations about relevant topics within the UCLA community.

As part of creating content for BruinLife’s streaming services and social media platforms, staff members should be comfortable speaking and presenting in front of a camera, interacting with guests and bringing energy, curiosity and personality to conversations.

The Video Podcast Staff will collaborate with BruinLife Video Staff on the technical production of episodes and with other BruinLife sections when developing stories, identifying guests and coordinating projects.

Responsibilities

  • Host and participate in video podcast episodes for BruinLife’s streaming services and social media platforms.

  • Engage with members of the UCLA community to spark meaningful conversations about relevant topics, experiences and stories.

  • Research potential episode topics, trends, guests and discussion points.

  • Assist with developing podcast concepts, episode formats and recurring segments.

  • Prepare for interviews and conversations by developing questions, talking points, scripts and episode outlines.

  • Interview students, organizations and other members of the Bruin community on camera.

  • Create an engaging and welcoming environment that allows guests to comfortably share their experiences and perspectives.

  • Collaborate with Video Staff to communicate the creative direction and goals of each episode before and during production.

  • Work with other BruinLife sections to develop podcast episodes and video content related to their stories, projects and coverage.

  • Participate in promotional and short-form content related to podcast episodes for BruinLife’s social media platforms.

  • Table/flyer to promote the yearbook portraits and yearbook.

  • Complete a minimum of 3 office hours: All BruinLife staff members must fulfill this requirement. Office hours may be completed at any time during the week at your discretion. The purpose of these office hours are to work on BruinLife yearbook assignments in-office, but we also encourage staffers to utilize the office to study, rest, and socialize with other BruinLife members.

  • Attend all-staff meetings and section meetings.

  • Complete at least 1 one-on-one with your section editor per quarter.

Qualifications

Applicants do not need prior podcasting, interviewing or on-camera experience to apply. Staff workshops and office hours will be available to help staff members develop their hosting, interviewing and content creation skills.

Applicants should be comfortable or willing to become comfortable speaking in front of a camera, interacting with new people and participating in conversations with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Strong candidates will be curious, personable and enthusiastic about storytelling and the UCLA community. They should be able to research and prepare for conversations while also thinking on their feet and asking thoughtful follow-up questions.

Experience with public speaking, interviewing, podcasting, journalism, content creation or other on-camera work is a plus, but is not required.
