Established in 1977, Pacific Ties is the oldest student-run Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) newsmagazine in the nation. We seek to showcase the rich and diverse stories of the APIDA community on and off campus through news and commentary. Today, we continue to create on-going dialogue that offers insight into the dynamics of being APIDA, challenges the perceptions of APIDA identity, and celebrates the achievements of the communities we all have ties to.

Pacific Ties Newsmagazine aims to be a platform for your voice and a chance to publish. Through our magazine, you will form connections with other APIDA writers/creatives, student groups, and community organizations. You will also gain valuable newsroom knowledge and a better understanding of the APIDA experience. As a Pacific Ties staff writer, you will be responsible for attending weekly staff meetings, pitching ideas, covering a range of events and topics relevant to the APIDA community at UCLA, in Los Angeles, or in the nation and beyond, and, most importantly, publishing articles on a regular basis (3 pieces a quarter at minimum).

Writing interns join one of four sections — 1) News, 2) Opinion, 3) Arts & Culture, 4) Creative — and can expect to stay in their section for at least one quarter, though there are opportunities to train and write for another section later. After successfully completing one quarter as an intern, writing interns become staff writers. Applicants do not need prior news writing experience to apply for this job. There will be Student Media training sessions taught by professionals, staff workshops, and office hours available for guidance. However, due to the nature of the position, writers with organized, persuasive, and succinct writing abilities will be preferred.

Pacific Ties hosts a mandatory training retreat subject to new intern availability in Weeks 3 and 4. Student Media's mandatory media law training and writing training for new staff writers will occur on January 21st from 10-4pm and February 4th from 9am-6:30pm.

Please submit one application to one position by the deadline. If accepted, there will be opportunities for you to train in/take on other positions you’re interested in. If we move forward with your application, you will be contacted through email to schedule an interview time. Please list an email you check often to ensure you accept the application invite in a timely manner. For any questions or concerns, contact [email protected] or EIC Varsha Ravi at [email protected].
