Pacific Ties Newsmagazine was created in 1977, becoming the first Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) student publication in the country. Our newsmagazine was born out of anti-imperialist activism, and we strive to uphold these values as a publication. We encourage our staff to utilize our platform to speak out against injustice within and outside of the APIDA community.
A Pacific Ties designer is responsible for working closely with writers in laying out pages, facilitating the overall design process of the print issue, producing visual components to supplement the writer’s work, and producing flyers and other promotional material. Designers may also submit original artwork/illustrations/photos for publication, either as a stand alone piece or in collaboration with a writing piece. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva and/or other creative platforms is encouraged, but experience with Adobe InDesign is strongly preferred. Our weekly required meetings are held from 6-7PM on Wednesdays.
Applicants can come from any major and do not need prior journalism experience to apply.
If your application is accepted, you will be contacted by email for a short interview. Please note that mandatory media law and journalism training for new staff members will occur following acceptance of the position, tentatively slated for Jan. 19 and 26.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Julianne Le at [email protected] or @pacifictiesmag on Instagram.
