    Jan. 14, 2024, 11:59 p.m.

Established in 1977, Pacific Ties is the oldest student-run Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) newsmagazine in the nation. We seek to showcase the rich and diverse stories of the APIDA community on and off campus through news and commentary. Today, we continue to create on-going dialogue that offers insight into the dynamics of being APIDA, challenges the perceptions of APIDA identity, and celebrates the achievements of the communities we all have ties to.

Pacific Ties Newsmagazine aims to be a platform for your voice and a chance to publish. Through our magazine, you will form connections with other APIDA writers/creatives, student groups, and community organizations. You will also gain valuable newsroom knowledge and a better understanding of the APIDA experience. Art & Design interns will be given story assignments and collaborate with the writer to make graphics. If interested, interns may also produce and publish standalone graphics.

After successfully completing one quarter as an intern, design interns become staff designers. Art & Design interns and staff are responsible for attending weekly staff meetings, illustrating or designing graphics (e.g. to accompany writers’ pieces, as standalone visual pieces, for print magazine cover art, etc.), assisting with web design plan, and/or creating page designs/layouts for the quarterly print magazine. (These are examples of responsibilities you may have, but you will not be asked to do all of the items listed. Please see the application questions for more details about this role.) They will also collaborate with other staff members (writers, editors, etc.) and are required to communicate progress regularly to the managing team as far as meeting assigned deadlines.

Pacific Ties hosts a mandatory training retreat subject to new intern availability in Weeks 3 and 4. Student Media's mandatory media law training and design training for new staff illustrators and designers will occur on January 21st from 10-4pm and January 28th from 10am-5pm.

Please submit one application to one position by the deadline. If accepted, there will be opportunities for you to train in/take on other positions you’re interested in. If we move forward with your application, you will be contacted through email to schedule an interview time. Please list an email you check often to ensure you accept the application invite in a timely manner. For any questions or concerns, contact [email protected] or EIC Varsha Ravi at [email protected].
