La Gente is seeking copy interns to assist in the editorial process. As a copy intern, you will proofread and edit all written material before finalization and publishing. Errors in grammar, punctuation, word flow, and spelling should be your main priorities, but stay alert for anything that might go against the AP style guide. In this position, you will also prioritize fact-checking and ensuring all information not originating from the writer is correctly cited. As an intern, you will develop a relationship with the rest of the writing team and learn the ins and outs of producing/publishing on a news media platform. Some familiarity with the AP style guide is preferred, but not required.
To successfully complete the internship by the end of the quarter, interns must have completed the following tasks to your editor's satisfaction: Edit a minimum of two articles, as assigned by the editorial staff. Edit a minimum of two written materials (ex. Social media posts, non-article publications), as assigned by the editorial staff. Attend La Gente orientation. Attend a minimum of seven weekly meetings (TBD). Attend a minimum of one cultural community/school event.
In addition to position-specific training, all interns are required to attend mandatory training as provided by Student Media on the one of the following tentative dates: October 18th, 19th, 25th, & 26th, and November 1st and 2nd (Trainings take place over ONE weekend, NOT THREE. Further information will be provided once accepted as an intern). Interviews with the editorial staff will be scheduled during Week 2.
