    News Writer Intern
  • Deadline:
    Jan. 13, 2025, 12:15 p.m.

Job Description:

The Daily Bruin is looking to hire interns for the News section. Interns will serve as reporters, pitching and sourcing News stories that relate to the UCLA campus or which impact UCLA students. Reporters will be expected to work on deadline to produce high quality writing and to tell stories that matter. Successful reporters will be offered opportunities for promotion in line with the number of stories that they have written, including to paid staff positions. News reporters will also have the opportunity to “cross-train” into other sections at the Daily Bruin after spending one quarter at the paper.

The Daily Bruin is an equal opportunity employer. The News section has specific promotional pathways available for four-year undergraduate students, transfer students and graduate students.

About the Organization:

The Daily Bruin is UCLA’s independent, on-campus student newspaper. The paper – founded in 1919 – is one of the most successful student papers in the country, winning several national awards each year and with alumni going on to succeed as professional journalists. Printing three times per week, the Bruin is distributed across campus and also read by members of the local community. In the past year, the Bruin’s work has also been featured in outlets including the BBC, CNN, NBC and Sky News.

The News section of the Daily Bruin is responsible for covering campus, local and national news. It is organized into five different beats: Campus Politics, Features & Student Life, National News & Higher Education, Metro, and Science & Health. Interns for the News section can expect to report on a variety of topics: even though they are initially assigned to a single beat, they are able to write for multiple beats once completing their training. The News section has an important role in highlighting underserved communities, holding powerful people to account and countering the spread of misinformation on college campuses.

All candidates must:

  • Attend two in-person training days. Student media training is tentatively set to be Jan. 19 and Feb 25 will be provided by external professional journalists. Interns do not get a choice about which days to attend training – they will be assigned to specific workshops on one of the two days each weekend. Please note that candidates will be informed of their application's result on Jan. 17 so should aim to keep Jan. 19 free

  • Commit to writing at least three stories per quarter, including interviewing at least three sources per story

  • Commit to not working for Bruin Democrats, Bruin Republicans or in student government at UCLA if hired. This includes – but is not limited to – the Undergraduate Student Association Council and the Graduate Students Association. News writers also cannot serve as staff for commission offices that are subsidiary to either organization. Doing so is considered a conflict of interest and exposes us to potential legal issues.

  • Be willing to follow instructions from their editors

  • Commit to following high standards of workplace professionalism

Particular strong candidates will:

  • Have a strong attitude towards learning

  • Be motivated to writing for News over an extended period of time

  • Read or engage with existing News media

  • Have some experience working or participating in student activities

Candidates are not required or expected to have previous experience working in News or student media. There is no specific major required to be a News intern: the Daily Bruin accepts interns from across disciplines.

Application Timeline: Applications are due by Noon on Monday of Week Two (Jan. 13). Strong candidates will be invited to interview with News editors during Week Two and will be notified of decisions by Friday of Week Two (Jan. 17). Intern applicants are only permitted to apply to one section. The Daily Bruin accepts applications twice a year, in the fall and winter quarters. The News section will not accept late applications or applications submitted via email.

Questions about aspects of the application process can be directed to [email protected].
