Al-Talib provides an independent perspective on issues important to Muslim communities. Targeting a college-age audience at UCLA, we seek to create an outlet for activism and creativity on and off campus, a platform for representation of all facets of the Muslim-American communities and a safe space for sensitive topics. We believe that this sort of dialogue, no matter how uncomfortable it may be at times, is necessary in order for our community to appreciate and celebrate its diversity.
The responsibilities of the Writing Intern include: -Write and eventually publish articles and prose through Al-Talib Newsmagazine upon the completion of UCLA Media Training -Work alongside the Co-Managing Editors to receive feedback and edits -Draft content to be featured in the annually published Print Issue
The Writing Intern position is divided into 3 subcategories:
Culture/Spirituality: as entailed, articles in this category are meant to talk about topics related to religion or Islamic culture. Examples include fasting during Ramadan, the Shia-Sunni divide, or simply talking about stories from the hadith that serve as Islamic reminders.
Current Events: articles in this group talk about any political events, social trends, or anything recent that relates to our community. Examples from previous years include the Iranian protests and the earthquakes in Syria.
Campus/Lifestyle: articles in this category talk about anything that is happening on campus or detailing important habits/routines that Muslims have in UCLA and in broader communities in the United States. Examples include the importance of our prayer space on campus, Jummah prayers on campus, or really any article that touches upon big events on campus (eg. covering the UC strikes).
