Data and Graphics Intern

  • Category:
    Data and Graphics Intern
  • Deadline:
    Oct. 4, 2021, noon

Data and Graphics is a new section that emerged from the combination of Daily Bruin’s Graphics and Stack sections with the purpose of creating interactive, data-driven content while retaining visual appeal.

As a Data and Graphics journalist for the Daily Bruin, you will be able to convey stories that are relevant to our campus through data-driven visualizations and infographics. Team members within the Data and Graphics section are divided based on focuses, which are described below.

Data Focus: As a data journalism intern, you'll gain practical reporting, data analysis and web development experience working to create projects on deadline. We use JavaScript and Python to create our interactive articles, and we will teach you all the skills you’ll need to know during training. ( To see past Stack’s past work, follow this link: https://stack.dailybruin.com/ )

Graphics Focus: Creates graphics (mainly infographics) that accompany articles from other sections of the newsroom, including the interactive visualizations made by our Data Focus. You will also have the chance to pitch your own original ideas for graphic journalism. Members with a Graphics focus will use Adobe Illustrator to create graphics — however, it is not necessary that you know how to use the program, as there will be training on this software. Dual Focus: Contributes to the work of both the Graphics and Data Focus.

REQUIREMENTS:

Interns with a Graphics focus are expected to create at least 4 graphics per quarter. Interns with a Data focus are expected to work on one major Data (aka “Stack”) project per quarter. Interns with a Dual focus are expected to create at least 2 graphics per quarter and participate in one Stack project.

Please note that content production requirements will vary depending on the number of team members and demands of other content sections.

Regardless of your focus, all interns are expected to be available for two 30-minute meetings per week.

Applications are due by Monday, October 4th, at 12 PM PST. Please contact Alex Yoo ([email protected]) and Laurel Woods ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

The section is divided into different focuses for the main purpose of efficient communication and organization— all interns will be closely involved with each other regardless of focus and will be encouraged to collaborate. We will also have workshops and training for both focuses for those who are interested.

No intern is required (nor expected) to have both graphic design and data analysis skills/experience. Training and further assistance will be provided at the beginning of and throughout your time at Daily Bruin.

Questions that do NOT have a specified focus (questions #1-6, 12-13, 15) should be answered by all interns. If you are applying to the Graphics or Dual focus, you must respond to all questions that are labeled "[GRAPHICS/DUAL FOCUS]". If you are applying to the Data or Dual focus, you must respond to all questions that are labeled "[DATA/DUAL FOCUS]".
