The application is designed to acquaint applicants with the duties and responsibilities of the general manager, and to give applicants an opportunity to share with the Communications Board their assessment of the radio station and their plans for its future. The first part of this application includes the Communications Board’s mission for UCLA Radio and the general manager’s job description and affirmation criteria. By signing this application, each candidate agrees to the principles and responsibilities described in these four documents. The second part of the application asks general manager candidates to assess the radio station’s current performance, to outline their goals for the radio station in the coming year, and to present a plan for achieving those goals. All application materials are considered confidential, and will only be shared with the Communications Board, the media director and the media adviser.
Applicants are free to share their own applications, in whole or part, with members of the radio staff.
In addition to the application, radio general manager candidates must schedule a meeting with Doria Deen to review the editor selection process and must be interviewed by the Communications Board.

UCLA Radio is UCLA’s student radio station.
UCLA Radio has a unique historical and official status at UCLA and three major responsibilities.
The first responsibility is the dissemination of news, information, and opinion of value or interest to its audience. News and information should be reported and presented fairly and impartially and opinion should be adequately qualified or supported. The station should strive to make its air time a forum for public opinion. The right to disseminate news and opinion is a public trust and must not be used for selfish or unworthy motives.
UCLA Radio’s second responsibility is to entertain and provide music and athletic coverage of general interest to its audience.
The station’s third major responsibility is to provide a medium for the paid broadcast of official announcements, promotion of campus activities, and opportunities and advertisements about commercial products or services.
As publisher, the UCLA Communications Board has ultimate responsibility for the station. It selects the general manager and sales manager, approves the station’s budget, provides adequate facilities and resources, and establishes policies to maintain a free, responsible and self-supporting station. The Board supports UCLA Radio’s right to learn and report the facts.
UCLA Radio has full independence of editorial content and opinion as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and limited by legal and ethical restraints. It is guided by the UCLA Radio Constitution and policies established by the Communications Board.
As a student-managed and operated station, UCLA Radio promotes student involvement and responsibility by providing practical broadcast journalism experience and opportunities for students to develop and improve their journalism and business skills and prepare for media and other careers. UCLA Radio strives to augment the University of California’s mission of learning and education by providing a working editorial and business laboratory.
UCLA Radio staff should be aware that the Communications Board and ASUCLA would be the monetary targets of any suits to redress the broadcast of defamatory or other illegal statements.
[Duties Summary ]
Serves as chief administrative officer. Responsible for the marketing, management, and financial operation, including programming and production. The manager strives to establish the highest standards for the station guided by broadcast journalists’ code of ethics. The manager appoints key staff, authorizes special broadcasts, and coordinates with the general
manager and professional advisers to maintain a financially strong radio operation that serves the UCLA community within the parameters of the approved budget. The general manager has final responsibility and authority for all station matters.
Applicants: Must be a UCLA student in good standing and carrying a minimum of eight (8) units at the time of application. Must be eligible for re-enrollment the following quarter, with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of C+ (2.7) for undergraduates and B (3.0) for graduates.
In addition to the general requirements, applicants must have worked a minimum of one calendar year as a UCLA Radio staff manager at the time of his/her interview or show substantial experience; demonstrated knowledge of UCLA Radio organization and management; demonstrated leadership and management skills; and demonstrated knowledge of UCLA Radio audience and mission. Additional broadcast experience and knowledge of contemporary programming preferred. Knowledge of student groups, student government and the UCLA administration helpful.
After Appointment: Maintains UCLA student status as defined above and may not be on academic probation or will be deemed to have resigned. In such circumstance, the sales manager or one of the executive staff will assume the general manager’s duties for the remainder of the general manager’s appointed term. The general manager will complete required training before beginning duties. If appointed after regularly scheduled training, the general manager is responsible for completing all prescribed training on an ad hoc basis within one quarter.
Supervises station staff. Formally reports to the Communications Board and is directly responsible to the media director. Coordinates with career staff.
[Limits of Authority]
Operates within UCLA Communications Board guidelines and established Student Media UCLA procedures. Operates within the approved budget and may not commit UCLA Radio funds without the approval of the media director. Consults with the media adviser BEFORE broadcasting any potentially inappropriate, distasteful or legally questionable material.
Notifies the media director immediately about any significant matter affecting the station or any threatening or pending legal action against the station.
[Specific Duties and Responsibilities]
A. Completes general plans for the station.
B. Updates policy statements, style manuals, ethical codes and other reference materials for use in staff training and production.
C. Develops, with his/her staff and the professional staff, plans for the year, quarter, and each broadcast week.
2. Staffing and Organization
A. Selects, in consultation with the appropriate professional staff, individuals to fill senior staff positions. Consults with senior staff in their selection of individuals for their staff.
B. Evaluates senior staff performance and counsels, promotes or demotes to meet the objectives of the station.
C. Ensures his/her staff adheres to professional standards.
D. Continually recruits and helps train new staff and contributors.
E. Assumes, or delegates, the duties of key staff if they are absent.
F. Recruits and grooms qualified candidates for managers and key staff positions.
A. Is knowledgeable of the financial status of the station at all times and ensures the station operates within the approved budget.
A. Maintains, and ensures his/her staff maintains, contact with students, student leaders, faculty, administrators and student groups to ensure the station is serving the audience.
B. Maintains a minimum of ten posted office hours per week to facilitate communication with his/her staff, the professional staff and the UCLA Radio audience.
C. Coordinates activities between the station and the professional staff.
D. Conducts, or helps conduct, periodic listenership surveys to determine if the station’s programming is of interest or value to listeners.
E. Attends Communications Board meetings. Acts as an adviser to the Board and its committees.
F. Helps the staff and the adviser prepare and submit contest entries and broadcasts news about station or staff awards.
The UCLA Communications Board requires that UCLA Radio general manager appointees satisfy the conditions detailed in this document before being affirmed as general manager.
The process requires the appointee to complete preparations for the successful operation of a radio station during the summer months. A review session involving the appointee and the media director will be held at the end of the summer to review the appointee’s performance.
Based on a recommendation resulting from the review session, the UCLA Communications Board will decide whether to affirm the appointee. In the event that the UCLA Communications Board fails to affirm the appointee, it will reopen the position. This
document communicates the affirmation requirements for a UCLA Radio general manager.
The Communications Board will base its decision to affirm appointees based on successful completion of the following:

The UCLA Radio plan is one of the products of the Summer training requirement. These plans will be reviewed by the Communications Board as part of the affirmation process.
