The application is designed to acquaint applicants with the duties and responsibilities of a magazine editor, and to give applicants an opportunity to share with the Communications Board their assessment of the magazine and their plans for its future. The first part of this application includes the editor’s job description and affirmation criteria, and the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.
By submitting this application, each candidate agrees to the principles and responsibilities described in these three documents. The second part of the application asks editor candidates to assess the magazine’s current performance, to outline their goals for the magazine in the coming year, and to detail a plan for achieving those goals. All application materials are considered confidential, and will only be shared with the Communications Board, the media director and the media adviser. Applicants are free to share their own applications, in whole or part, with members of the magazine staff.

Serves as chief administrative officer. Responsible for the content, appearance, production, efficient financial operation and overall quality of the magazine. The editor in chief is responsible for upholding the mission of the magazine. The editor strives to establish the highest standards for the paper guided by the professional journalists’ code of ethics. The editor hires the editorial staff and coordinates with the professional advisers to produce a strong magazine that serves the magazine’s special audience and the UCLA community within the parameters of the approved budget. The editor coordinates staff training in conjunction with the media adviser to provide a valuable educational experience for editorial staff. The editor has final responsibility and authority for all editorial matters.
Applicants: Must be a UCLA student in good standing and carrying a minimum of eight (8) units at the time of application. Must be eligible for re-enrollment the following quarter, with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of C+ (2.7) for undergraduate and B (3.0) for graduates.
In addition to the general requirements, applicants must have worked a minimum of one quarter as a staff member of a Student Media UCLA publication/station at the time of application OR show substantial demonstrated experience; demonstrated leadership and management skills; knowledge of the community the magazine serves; magazine organization; management, production and use of the text management system preferred.
Knowledge of student groups, student government and UCLA administration preferred.
Additional journalism experience and knowledge of the magazine’s history and tradition desired.
After appointment: Maintain UCLA student status as defined above and may not be on academic probation or will be deemed to have resigned. In such circumstance the managing editor or other senior editor will act as interim editor until a replacement can be appointed.
The editor will complete required summer training before beginning duties. Appointment to the editor position must be affirmed by the UCLA Communications Board in the fall after the provisional. If appointed after regularly scheduled training, the editor is responsible for completing all prescribed training on an ad hoc basis within one quarter of appointment.
Supervises magazine staff. Formally reports to the Communications Board and is directly responsible to the media director. Coordinates with advertising and career staff.
[Limits of authority]
Operates within UCLA Communications Board guidelines and established Student Media procedures. Operates within the approved budget and may not commit to the expenditure of any funds without the approval of the media director. Consults with the media adviser BEFORE printing any potentially inappropriate, distasteful, or legally questionable copy, photos or graphics. Notifies the media director immediately about any significant matter affecting the magazine or threatening or pending legal action against the magazine.
[Specific Duties and Responsibilities]
A. Completes general plans for the magazine before the beginning of the academic year. Develops written goals for the year to be reviewed by the Communications Board as part of its affirmation process.
B. Takes part in summer training for magazine editors and contributes, with the media adviser and director, to planning for training for new interns and staff.
2. Staffing and organization
A. Selects, in consultation with the appropriate career staff, individuals to fill staff positions. Evaluates senior staff performance and counsels, promotes or demotes to meet the objectives of the magazine.
B. Ensures staff adheres to professional standards (e.g. Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, attached).
C. Continually recruits and, in conjunction with the media adviser and director, helps train new staff and contributors.
D. Delegates, or in cases of extreme emergency assumes, the duties of key staff if they are absent.
E. Recruits and grooms qualified candidates for editor-in-chief.
A. Is knowledgeable of the budget status of the magazine at all times and ensures the magazine operates within the approved budget.
A. Maintains, and ensures staff maintains, contact with students, student groups, student leaders, special interest groups, faculty and administrators to ensure the magazine is serving the audience.
B. Maintains a minimum of 10 posted office hours per week to facilitate communication with staff, the professional staff and the magazine audience.
C. Conducts, or helps conduct, periodic readership surveys to determine if the magazine’s content is of interest or value to readers.
D. Attends Communications Board meetings. Acts as an adviser to the Board and its committees.
E. Schedules and attends regular meetings with the media director and the media adviser.
5. Newsgathering and production
A. Establishes a system of newsgathering that is appropriate to the magazine’s mission.
B. Establishes a publication schedule with the media director.
C. Ensures staff meets established deadlines.
D. As needed, works nights, weekends and academic breaks to conduct workshops or complete special projects.
E. Responsible for attending, or sending a representative, to meetings involving campus leaders or major campus issues.
The UCLA Communications Board requires that magazine editor in chief appointees satisfy the conditions detailed in this document before being affirmed as editor in chief. The process requires the appointee to complete preparations for the successful operation of a magazine during the summer months. A review session involving the appointee and the media director will be held at the end of the summer to review the appointee’s performance. Based on a recommendation resulting from the review session, the UCLA Communications Board will decide whether to affirm the appointee. In the event that the UCLA Communications Board fails to affirm the appointee, it will reopen the position. This document communicates the
affirmation requirements for the magazine editor in chief.
The Communications Board will base its decision to affirm appointees based on successful completion of the following:
Summer editors training program
Editors are expected to commit to a summer training program. Summer training will consist of a mixture of formal training workshops, coaching sessions and ongoing self-directed work.
As soon as applicants can, they should share their summer schedules with the media director so specific dates and hours can be determined. Applicants should expect to devote at least eight (8) hours per week to the summer training program.
Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice.
[Seek truth and report it]
Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information. Journalists should:
• Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.
• Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.
• Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
• Always question sources’ motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.
• Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.
• Never distort the content of news photos or video. Image enhancement for technical clarity is always permissible. Label montages and photo illustrations.
• Avoid misleading re-enactments or staged news events. If re-enactment is necessary to tell a story, label it.
• Avoid undercover or other surreptitious methods of gathering information except when traditional open methods will not yield information vital to the public. Use of such methods should be explained as part of the story.
• Never plagiarize.
• Tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so.
• Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.
• Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status.
• Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.
• Give voice to the voiceless; official and unofficial sources of information can be equally valid.
• Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.
• Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.
• Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public's business is conducted in the open and that government records are open to inspection.
Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect. Journalists should:
• Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
• Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.
• Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance.
• Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone’s privacy.
• Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.
• Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes.
• Be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.
• Balance a criminal suspect’s fair trial rights with the public’s right to be informed.
Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.
• Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
• Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
• Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
• Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
• Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
• Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
• Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.
Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other. Journalists should:
• Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
• Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
• Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
• Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
• Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.
