  • Fall 2016

A Video intern is tasked to create content for the Daily Bruin Video section. Not only does the section provide a second layer of compelling content for other sections of the Bruin, but also finds more visual stories around UCLA worth telling. An intern will learn how to pitch, interview, film and edit videos to form these stories. They will better understand the digital landscape from professional mentorships in the digital media and film industry. No previous experience is necessary. Gain valuable skills and pieces to add to your portfolio in an emerging and powerful medium, while joining a community of videographers, film lovers, and storytellers.

The Questions

Please answer to the best of your ability!

Video journalism is a growing field in the news and media community especially in the last few years. Why do you think Video is important in our current world today? What are the advantages of portraying newsworthy stories as a video? Is there a specific style of video that is currently more appealing and watchable?
Please answer this prompt in an essay no more than 350 words.

Tell us why you're interested in joining Daily Bruin Video and why you think you'd be a good fit for our section. Additionally, please let us know what interests you more regarding video journalism: the journalistic aspect (creating stories/interviewing subjects) or the video aspect (camerawork/editing)?
Please answer this prompt in an essay no more than 350 words.

You were just assigned a breaking news story about a shooting that broke out on campus. With such short notice, what kind of shots would you take and what questions would you want to ask interviewees?

The Arts & Entertainment section is running a preview of an art show at the Hammer Museum. A good amount of our content are videos that we do in conjunction with the print sections. How would you approach a video project to go alongside A&E's print story, without retreading the same angles and subjects they cover?

Consider recent events, people, or issues of interest related to UCLA and list one story idea you would pitch at a Daily Bruin Video planning meeting, along with a story angle to focus on.

The Actual Questions

Please solemnly swear that you will answer these truthfully.

If Humans of New York were to stop and interview you about your day, what would your response be?
Anywhere between a comedic one-liner or a heartfelt anecdote is fine with me.

What TV show or movie most closely aligns with your life? Or you wish it could be?
Sometimes my life feels like Kevin from the Office.

Who is your favorite fictional villain and why?
My answer: That Tulip monster thing from Stranger Things.

What movie/TV adaptation do you think was better than the book?
Please don't say Harry Potter.

Name the coolest place you've ever been.
Let me live vicariously through you.

Put down a link to a video that inspired you to finish this application. What about it stands out to you?
This was a long app. There had to be something that kept you going.
