Graphics is a multimedia section within the Daily Bruin that creates visual aids that provide an easy-to-digest representation of information related to the corresponding story.
Types of graphics we make include (but aren't limited to) timelines, pie/bar/line charts, tables, etc. Graphics' challenge is to take the data, however simple or complicated, and present it in a both visually appealing and easy to understand way. As a Graphics intern, you will learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator, collaborate with different departments, and produce art from data.
We welcome any and all applicants from all majors and levels of experience. No previous experience is required.
If you have any questions about the application, the section, or the work we do, email the Graphics editor, LeAnn Woo, at [email protected]
Tell us as much as you think we need to know, good luck!
Do you have past experience in graphics or design? If so, please provide a description of it. If not please list any other experience you feel is relevant or why you want to be a part of the section.
Please select which design software you are familiar with.
Create a mockup graphic, either digital or hand drawn, using the data provided here: http://bit.ly/2boMEsN
Provide links to two graphics you like/don't like and critique them. You are encouraged to use Daily Bruin graphics.
Keep in mind how visuals affect how easy it is to understand the information.
While graphics usually accompany a story written by another reporter, we sometimes produce standalone graphics that we pitch and produce completely on our own. Examples include Best Places to Nap on Campus and Top Ten Emojis of 2015. Please pitch three standalone graphics, give a rough description of how it should look, and how it relates to the UCLA student population.
Tell us a funny story about yourself.
It should be funny.
Please attach your resume.
If you have a portfolio, please provide the link.
